Solid State Drives: Expect More at CES
December 18th, 2007 by Sarah E. Anderson
We’re very excited about the possibility of seeing new solid state drives and notebooks which feature them at CES.
As always, the price of storage will continue to decline, and the drives’ capacities will continue to rise. One SSD maker is predicting 64GB on one half-inch chip by the end of the decade, which means fitting that much storage into today’s notebooks is already feasible. You should see at least 128GB SSD notebooks by the end of 2008.
Expect hybrids to trickle down into regular consumer systems. Because notebooks can use the SSD to launch applications and Web sites, this is a win-win. It’s also more of a necessity since as the year progresses, finding an XP notebook will be increasingly difficult. So if you’re in the market for a new consumer notebook, you can expect Vista, but you should opt for a hybrid.
